Top 5 Regrets of the Dying (and Living!)

12 Apr

I recently read an article about the book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying by Bronnie Ware.  The information is not really new or surprising, however, I find the information shocking!

In a nutshell, the Five Regrets of the Dying are:

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. (This is about choosing to dream and honoring your dreams.)

2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.

3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

I’m guessing you aren’t overly surprised by the list either.  What I find absolutely shocking is how many people I know or work with are heading down the path of repeating one or more of these tired, old regrets.  From my perspective, all of these are clearly within our ability to change.  You Have Choice!

I don’t believe the only answers are “Yes, I have that regret” or “No, I don’t have this regret.”  I think it’s probably more of a sliding scale from “Crap, my life is seriously out of whack” – to – “I’ve really mastered this area of my life.”  If this were a 1 – 10 scale I doubt many people could honestly circle 10,  the bigger question:  are you even close?

Here’s the choice I’m putting before you today, think about how you’d rate your life today for each of the 5 regrets.  Is this where you want to be? What’s the cost of answers below a 7?  What are you willing to do if you’re not satisfied with the answer?  You Have Choice!
